Coming into the Representations of Greece: Ancient & Modern class, I didn't know what to expect. I had always been interested in European history and Greece specifically. I was expecting the class would be history focused with an addition of the internship, but I ended up learning much more.
I was not sure how the class would be organized due to me not knowing specifically what the content of the course would be. In the first part of the class, it was mainly reading comprehension focused. I was able to take a reading, analyze it, and learn how to be able to present my depiction of the reading. This helped in my overall understanding when it came time to analyze the films. The second part of the class was learning how to write about these new understandings in a way to apply it to these films. The third part was focused on applying all that we have learned to the films submitted for the Los Angeles Greek Film Festival. We analyzed the past of Greek culture to current events that allowed us to understand the world we were diving into.
By finally understanding the discourse related with Greek cinema, I was able to take my knowledge and translate it into diving deeper into the films I was watching. I began to be able to question the way in which Greek filmmakers and Greek films in general are represented in the media in the modern day.
For the internship, I worked with Melinda Manos, who helps with Public Relations for the Los Angeles Greek Film Festival. She had me perform several tasks including creating media graphics and doing public outreach for the festival. First, I created social media graphics for one of her clients, Adore the Couture. These media graphics included the publicizing of her Pop-Up shop. I sent her 5 unique graphics, which took me about 8 hours with edits and all. She then presented these to her client and got back to me with edits. I took these edits and created a couple more drafts, which took about 7 more hours.
This class was a huge learning experience for me. I learned how hard I can work to understand something, seeing as this class was very difficult for me and challenged me in ways I have never been challenged in school. I have used this class and the text Representations to apply to other classes as well, and it has improved my understanding and performance in those classes as well.
